Celebrating Culture. Giving Back to Our Community.
L’Arche Saint John is honoured to be the charitable beneficiary of Onam Maholsavam 2026, a community celebration organized by the Saint John Malayali Association. Taking place on September 20, the event will bring the community together to celebrate Kerala culture while raising funds in support of L’Arche Saint John.
What is Onam?
Onam is the traditional harvest festival of Kerala, a state in southern India. Much like Thanksgiving, it is a time for families and communities to come together in gratitude, celebration and fellowship.
At the heart of Onam is the legendary King Mahabali, remembered as a just and generous ruler whose kingdom was celebrated for equality, prosperity and harmony. According to tradition, Mahabali was sent to the netherworld but was granted the privilege of returning once every year to visit his people. Onam celebrates his annual homecoming.
The Malayali community of Saint John has proudly celebrated Onam for many years. Beginning this year, the Saint John Malayali Association is giving the celebration a new purpose — turning culture into an opportunity to give back to the community that welcomed us and became our new home.
Culture with a Cause.
Onam Maholsavam 2026 will feature the traditional welcome of King Mahabali accompanied by Kerala drum music, colourful Indian cultural dances and a professional live musical concert featuring musicians from Toronto and Halifax.
