In these cold, short January days, our artists have been busy creating at the studio, preparing for our upcoming exhibition at the Saint John Airport. This special exhibit, titled YSJ: Home, features a stunning collection of works by the 16
talented artists of L’Arche Creative Connections. Inspired by our uptown neighbourhood,
iconic Saint John views, and spaces that bring us together, these pieces explore the
meaning of home.
One of the pieces includes a mobile of seagulls soaring above the Port, entitled “Cranes
and Gulls." Patrick McGrath, one of the collaborators behind the piece, shared how
seagulls are a symbol of home for him: "I see Seagulls standing on the roof of the
buildings in the harbour. When we walk uptown I can hear them calling and see them
flying in circles.”
The Saint John Airport is a place of connection for our hometown, connecting Saint
Johners with the people and places we care about, like a front door.
“Airports are cool because they are links to other cities and other places," said Patrick, who is thrilled that his work is on display for visitors and locals.
Kathryn Titus, another artist at Creative Connections is excited to share her new piece,
“Take a break," inspired by the relationships and belonging she experiences at L’Arche.
“Belonging means being a part of Creative Connections. Making friends makes me
happy. My friends help me when I am sad.”
Her piece features two mugs on a busy art table. Behind them a wall full of her friends’
artwork is alive with colour.
“We use mugs at our break times when we make tea for each other," shares Kathryn. "We hang out, tease each other and talk about our lives. It is important to be together."
Home is more than just a place — it’s found in the relationships we build and the
connections we nurture. This exhibit invites you to reflect on belonging, inclusion, and
the heart of what makes a community.
YSJ: Home will be on display until mid-April 2025. An opening reception will take place
Friday, January 31 from 1:00 p.m. to 2 p.m. The public is warmly welcomed to come and celebrate with the artists of Creative Connections. For more information, visit: https://larchesaintjohn.org/blogs/news/creative-connections-art-show-at-saint-john-airport
