Above: Kathryn, a L'Arche Connects member and artist, works on a painting at Creative Connections. As she approaches her first holiday in her new apartment, she looks forward to decorating and creating new traditions.
When Kathryn moved into her new apartment at the Wellington over the Canada Day weekend, Christmas holidays were the furthest thing from her mind. But time flies quickly and with each month of living on her own, Kathryn is discovering new joys and things to look forward to.
Kathryn is one of four core members of L’Arche Connects – L’Arche Saint John’s new supported independent living program. I sat down with Kathryn to talk about the upcoming season and what Kathryn is thinking about heading into the holidays.
Kathryn is delighted to decorate her apartment and put up her Christmas tree, filled with beautiful ornaments – some of which she has created over the years at Creative Connections.
Kathryn told me that she loves all of the traditions that come with being a part of L’Arche at this time of year – like making Christmas cards at Creative Connections, decorating the Christmas tree at the Lieutenant Governor’s residence, and taking in the town on that magical evening which is Uptown Sparkles.
Traditions are at the heart of our community and so L’Arche Connects is eager to start what we hope will become an annual tradition of our own: “Connectmas,” when we will gather together for a holiday breakfast that promises to be full of surprises and fun.
Like many firsts, Kathryn says she is not quite sure what to expect but feels really positive and thinks that her first Christmas in a home of her own is going to be “really good”. Wise words, Kathryn! I think that it will be really good, too.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone, from L’Arche Connects!
