Celebrating the impact of L’Arche Connects: Shawna’s journey to independence

Above: Shawna (left) and Catherine reflect on the one-year anniversary of Shawna moving into a new apartment and receiving support from L'Arche. It's been a year of growth, independence and transformation.

“The L’Arche Connects program has honestly been one of the most positive things to happen in my life," Shawna reflects. "Unlike previous situations, I am treated with respect and not infantilized."

Around this time last year, I had the joy of helping Shawna settle into her new apartment at The Wellington. It was a moment filled with excitement, marking a significant milestone in her journey. The months leading up to this were filled with frequent trips between Fredericton and Saint John as we navigated medical appointments, engaged with her support system, and prepared for the L’Arche Connects program, all while Shawna was in temporary housing.

Since moving into her own space, Shawna has experienced some amazing changes and achievements. For one, she’s become much more vocal about advocating for herself and others with disabilities. It’s been amazing to see her confidence grow.

Having her own apartment has also been a game-changer for her employment situation. She’s now employed and no longer worries about bothering care workers with early pickups. This stability has really improved her day-to-day life.

"I’m supported in living my life rather than being told how to live it," Shawna shares. "I’m expected to navigate and learn from my mistakes, which is a new and valuable experience for me. The program’s model is setting me up for success by allowing me to make mistakes without criticism and offering support when needed.”

Making her own decisions has been incredibly validating for Shawna. After years of having to ask for permission, she’s now relishing the autonomy that comes with her new living situation. Having a stable place has also helped her let go of items she was holding onto out of fear, marking a significant step towards feeling truly at home.

With her own kitchen, Shawna has embraced cooking and discovered the joys of her air fryer. She’s been cooking more for herself and enjoying the culinary freedom that comes with having her own space. Additionally, Shawna finally got her power chair, which was not allowed in some of her previous homes. This new mobility has given her the freedom to explore her neighbourhood and attend events on her own terms.

“The support I’ve received has been crucial in helping me stay in my apartment and obtain necessary items for my health," Shawna says. "When I face stressful days, I know there is usually someone I can talk to or seek advice from. I’m deeply grateful for the respect and support from L’Arche, which is mutual and consistent.”
