SAINT JOHN – A growing partnership between L’Arche Saint John and Port Saint John is building a brighter future for adults with intellectual disabilities in the region.
“L’Arche is a community of welcome, but in the past year we have had the pleasure of being welcomed into the Port Saint John family. The Port’s commitment to community building and inclusion is a great source of support and joy for L’Arche Saint John,” says L’Arche Saint John Executive Director Zoël Breau.
The Port has generously donated $5,000 to L’Arche Saint John’s Brighter Futures Fund to sustain and grow L'Arche services to adults with intellectual disabilities.
“We’re grateful for the Port’s investment in the future growth of L’Arche Saint John, and so thankful for its support of the L’Arche mission of making known the gifts of adults with intellectual disabilities,” Breau says.
The Port has been welcoming L’Arche into the Port community. At the Port Pod in the AREA 506 Container Village, custom postcards made by artists with intellectual disabilities are for sale to international tourists arriving by cruise.
The artists are part of Creative Connections, a day program and art studio run by L’Arche Saint John at 95 Prince William St. They were thrilled to have their artworks at the Port Pod, an interpretive centre for all things Port Saint John.
"L'Arche Saint John is an integral support for our community and we are pleased to sponsor their Brighter Futures Fund. L'Arche provides programs that help build an inclusive future for Saint John and we thank them for that," says Craig Bell Estabrooks, President & CEO at Port Saint John.
The Brighter Futures Fund was launched in 2021 to sustain and grow L’Arche Saint John’s support to adults with intellectual disabilities.
Other foundational supporters of the Brighter Futures Fund include Moosehead Breweries, the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception and Frank McKenna, the former premier of New Brunswick.
The endowment fund is hosted by the Greater Saint John Community Foundation. It allows anyone to donate any amount in support of L’Arche Saint John. Donations to the Brighter Futures Fund are not spent but instead grow the endowment.
